HubSpot is a developer and marketer of software products for inbound marketing and sales. It was founded by Brian Halligan and Dharmesh Shah in 2006. HubSpot provides tools for social media marketing, content management, web analytics, landing pages and search engine optimization. While Brian was helping venture-backed startups with their go-to-market strategy, we started to notice something curious: Customers had gotten really good at blocking out interruptive marketing and sales tactics. The tried and true tactics of old (direct mail, email blasts, cold calls) simply weren’t effective anymore. Meanwhile, Dharmesh’s blog OnStartups was seeing massive growth in traffic. We’ll admit, we were surprised. How had this tiny blog with no budget generated more traffic than companies with professional marketing teams and way bigger budgets? It felt like a modern-day David versus Goliath.

So after many meetings, even more coffee, and the occasional Belgian beer (a shared favorite of ours) we came to the simple observation:
People don’t want to be interrupted by marketers or harassed by salespeople. They want to be helped. It was time to make the marketing and sales process human. Time to treat buyers like people, not numbers on a spreadsheet. Time to build an inbound community and help people achieve their business goals in a more personable, empathetic way.
We called it, HubSpot.


The company grew from $255,000 in revenues in 2007 to $15.6 million in 2010. Later that year HubSpot acquired Oneforty, the Twitter app store founded by Laura Fitton. The company also introduced new software for personalizing websites to each visitor. According to Forbes, HubSpot started out targeting small companies but "moved steadily upmarket to serve larger businesses of up to 1000 employees." HubSpot filed for an initial public offering with the Securities and Exchange Commission on August 25, 2014 requesting they be listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol HUBS. In July 2017, HubSpot acquired Kemvi, which applies artificial intelligence and machine learning to help sales teams.

HubSpot is predicted to surpass revenue of $500 million in 2018 after posting revenue of $375 million last year. HubSpot was able to deliver a stellar EPS beat last quarter posting 17 cents when the consensus was a minuscule 5 cents, beating the forecast by more than three times. HubSpot grew its customer base 40% YOY to over 52,500.

The Hubspot COS/CMS adds more value to the traditional functions of the COS/CMS by delivering targeted content to leads at various levels in the conversion funnel. The Smart Content feature is configured on the basis of the contact list that you already have or the buyer’s journey. So, now you could have tailored messages for the new visitors, leads, or customers on the basis of their journey in the marketing funnel.
